Fun Ideas for a Second-Baby Shower
Posted on February 7th, 2010 No commentsAs everyone knows, preparing for a baby means acquiring a lot of new items – which makes a baby shower almost a necessity. It allows family and friends to show the mom-to-be how much love and support she has. Some people consider it improper to have a second-baby shower, since it was unlikely that mom and dad would need very much, especially the big-ticket items. It is now more acceptable to have a shower for a second baby, but you have to make some modifications.
You may want to consider having an essentials-only shower, having guests purchase those basic items that every baby needs new, like diapers, bottles, and bath accesories. You can add to the gift registry those items which the parents did not receive with their first baby. Another idea is to have a shower dedicated to the mom, where guests bring gifts that will help her relax during the last weeks of her pregnancy and after the birth. These can be pampering items like rich body wash, or practical items like pajamas.
It’s also a fun idea to have a shower where all the gifts are for mom – but are not related to being a mom, like a flirty nightdress or sexy nail polish (for when she can see her toes again!). Obviously mom and dad will need some time for themselves, so a nice idea might be to get a gift certificate for an elegant dinner – with babysitting included, of course. You might also consider sitting down with the father-to-be and the guests, prior to the party, to draw up a dry-erase calendar with offers of assistance to the new mom.
You can include activities like getting the house in order while mom’s in the hospital, helping run the older child to school or lessons, or even being an extra pair of hands during a big grocery trip or errands day. The finished calendar, with names and phone numbers in case of adjustments, can be presented to mom at the shower. Sometimes neither mom nor new baby needs any new items. You might decide to mark the upcoming birth with a straightforward party with friends and oved ones.
You could ask the guests to buy baby items, smaller items like diapers and clothing, and then bring them to donate to a women’s charity or shelter. A “freezer party” is another practical theme for a shower, where everyone comes with a freezeable or easily-stored dish of food. Mom will appreciate this help in the last days of her pregnancy and immediately after the birth. Make sure that mom knows about the shower ahead of time so she can determine if she has enough room for everything, and also pick a day for the shower which is close to her due date.
Do keep in mind that in the case of caboose babies (a “caboose” baby is born several years after the next-oldest sibling), a full shower can be held with no impropriety. In many cases mom and dad will no longer have even the big-ticket items anymore, or they might be considered unsafe under today’s standards.
Regardless of the type of shower you are holding or if the gifts are large or small, remember that you are there to let the mom know that she and her new baby have all your love and support.
